Psychological Therapy:

Psychological Therapy is an umbrella term used to describe the wide range of interconnected therapeutic approaches now available within Psychology, Counselling, Psychotherapy and Coaching. Each providing ways of exploring the psychological worlds we inhabit, and of working with the problems and challenges that we face in life. As with most things in life however, there is often no one specific right answer or single approach. This is why modern hybrid forms of psychological therapy are becoming increasingly integrated and multi-modal, which may reflect that ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’. This is why the Counselling, Psychotherapy, Hypnotherapy and Coaching that I provide is often a synthesis that is individually tailored to enable you to get the results you are looking for. Working with everything from day-to-day stress, anxiety and depression, to longer term problems, challenges and self development needs. What would you like to focus on in your life? Time for Therapy

Let Therapy Begin:

My aim is to provide you with a safe supportive space where together we can talk and work through whatever problems or challenges you are experiencing. Initially therapy is about exploring your experiences, the nature of your thoughts, emotions and behaviour. Exploring what is important for you in your life and finding out about what gives your life meaning. Your dreams, fantasies and most cherished beliefs can be very insightful. There are no areas of life that are taboo in therapy, only possibilities for greater understanding and personal growth. The Coaching services that I provide focuses on developing, enhancing and maintaining your existing performance, abilities, strengths and skills. What aspects of yourself would you like to explore, challenge and develop? Is it time for you to seize the day and focus on enhancing your life?

As a Psychologist, Therapist and Coach, I am passionate about the exploration of the human condition and the capabilities of the mind and body. One of the main focuses of my work as a psychologist, therapist and coach, is facilitating a process of self reflection. A process that clarifies our choices and responsibilities, both in relation to ourselves, towards others, and the world. The therapy and coaching process can help develop insight into our rational and emotional worlds. Therapy and coaching can help clarify the meaning that we make of our lives, and can help identify those aspects of ourselves that are not so beneficial and inhibit us from moving forward in more positive and productive ways. Therapy and coaching also provides the opportunity to identify and develop new resources, strengths and skills that are life enhancing and life affirming. Whether you are an individual, couple, group, family, in business or sport - psychological therapy can provide the opportunity to explore your past, present and future possibilities, and work towards unlocking and actualising your true potential.

My training as a Psychologist provides a solid grounding in Cognitive Science and Neuroscience research. Building on my life experience, my practice and study of Counselling, Psychological therapy and Coaching,  has, over the last fourteen years, allowed the development of a deep empathic understanding and attunement to the therapeutic needs of others. My study of philosophy has allowed me to develop a philosophically open nature, with an interest in issues of cultural diversity and evolving society. Philosophy has also helped develop a solid grounding in issues of human belief, morality and ethics. I am committed to treating all relationships with the utmost respect, providing psychological therapy that is confidential and based on BPS, BACP,  UKCP and NCH codes of Ethics, Conduct and Best Practice.

The Therapeutic Relationship:

Counselling, Psychological Therapy and Coaching represents an organic process that begins with our very first meeting and enriches over time. Research and experience shows that one of the main factors that makes therapy a success is the quality of the therapeutic relationship. This is why the most important aspect of our work together is often the  exploration of the relationship we experience with ourselves, with others and the world around us. It is through this exploration that we begin to get a sense of the way we are each orientated within our lives and what this means for us.

Through my work as a Counselling Psychologist I have developed a deep appreciation and respect for a wide range of interconnected therapeutic approaches to Counselling, Psychological Therapy and Coaching. I consider my approach to be a synthesis of all I have learned on my journey through life. My aim is to provide you with the most effective therapy possible. I believe this is only achievable when client and therapist are able to work dynamically and fluidly across theoretical boundaries, so that therapy is tailored specifically to your individual needs. The main approaches I incorporate within my  practice include: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Existential - Phenomenology. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Positive Psychology, Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Cognitive Hypnotherapy. In synthesis a unified psychological therapy.

The therapy I provide may include helping you to develop deep relaxation techniques, help with establishing a reflective meditation practice, and help with embodying a positive state of mind together with developing your attention, focusing, and  visualisation ability. I recommend booking a course of six sessions so that you are able to get a good sense of what you might gain from therapy or coaching and the development of a personal development program.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy:

Emphasises the importance of unconscious / subconscious processes. This approach aims at exploring deeper levels of what makes up personality - bringing into awareness psychological and behavioural patterns - defence mechanisms, that often have their origin within our childhood experiences, dramas and traumas. In our work together we would explore the developmental nature of the problems and issues with which we often struggle - this may include the role of common defence mechanisms such as the phenomenon of: Projection, Repression, Regression and Denial. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is a modern day descendent of Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalysis.

Existential Psychotherapy and Phenomenology:

Developed as an alternative to early Psychoanalytic based approaches. This approach is closely linked and informed by a very diverse philosophical history - It emphasises the importance of the relational and inter-relational nature of being a human being. It explores human uncertainty, the nature of anxiety and enquires into the the ways that we create meaning, our world-views and world-values. Our lived experience. It explores the way that our attributions and underlying assumptions about life inform the way that we see both ourselves, others and the world in general. This approach pays close attention to our lived bodily experience of what it is like for us as human beings to exist. There is a focus on personal responsibility, the horizon of our possibilities and on the nature of the choices that are available to us in the living of our lives. Psychodynamic Therapy, Existential Therapy and the Phenomenological Method are excellent ways of exploring the issues you bring to therapy at a deeper level of meaning.

One of the defining qualities of Existential - Phenomenology is the way that it challenges us to explore how we relate to unavoidable human challenges - known as existential givens. I have found Existential - Phenomenology particularly useful in relation to issues of to medical diagnosis, illness and death, and what that means within the context of our lives. Modern therapy has come full circle it seems and now echo's Buddhist Psychology - with its emphasis on the way that human suffering comes from the way we perceive and relate to our problems. When we develop insight and begin to understand the nature of our problems, we are better able to shift to more accepting ways of being - this in turn is what makes positive change possible. However, often I find due to time and financial constraints therapy needs to be specific and solution focused. For this reason I have incorporated Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement, Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), and Cognitive Hypnotherapy / Hypnosis into my practice. Approaches that can often often help to focus on and resolve stubborn issues and blocks in our lives.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT):

Has traditionally emphasised the importance of subconscious patterns of thinking and behaving that have negative effects on our emotional well being. CBT often takes a training / coaching approach that can systematically help you to face your fears and overcome anxiety, depression. Therapy can include the use of Computerised Biofeedback to help you to recognise the positive shifts you can begin to make in your patterns of thinking, emotions, behaviour and physiology. More recent developments in CBT have seen a rapid development that are moving this modality well beyond its original theoretical parameters, assumptions and limitations. CBT has now moved to incorporate research into the benefits of Buddhist ‘Mindfulness Meditation’, ‘Relaxation techniques’ and ‘Yoga’. All of which make excellent homework for anyone experiencing anxiety and depression. With over 25 years experience studying a wide range of internal arts, including Aikido, Tai Chi / Chi Gong and the practice of Shiatsu acupressure. My approach has the potential to add another dimension to your therapy. Excellent for exploring and integrating Mind and Body, being comfortably relaxed and putting the flow into your life.

Eye Movement, Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR):

EMDR is a hybrid therapy system that has emerged from a number of therapeutic approaches including Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Gestalt Psychology, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). EMDR is founded on cognitive science and neuroscience perspectives about how the mind and body work together at the neurological / chemical - adaptive information processing level. Research evidence has consistently shown the effectiveness of EMDR in helping  people reprocess traumatic experiences quickly and effectively. EMDR is recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) for working with the full range psychological trauma, traumatic memories and experiences -  including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The use of EMDR is not limited to helping process traumatic memories however, it has also found applications in reducing anxiety within a wide range of situations and contexts, including working with couple / relationship therapy and even sex therapy.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT):

If you are interested in working with your emotions and mind from an energy fields and body-mind perspective Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and / or Quantum Field Healing might be the answer. These approaches have developed in conjunction with Cognitive Hypnotherapy and NLP, and integrate eastern medicines energetic meridian perspectives from ancient body therapies, such as Shiatsu (acupressure) and acupuncture - employing tapping on these energy points and using spoken affirmations. QFH is a meditation and / or hypnotherapy / self hypnosis based visualisation that incorporates the most recent scientific findings available from genetics, chemistry an neuroscience, to enhance the perception and visualisation of actual physical changes the happen at the micro and quantum levels of human existence. This is a great little system that is simple and fun to use.

Hypnosis / Cognitive Hypnotherapy:

Hypnosis / Hypnotherapy provides another exciting way of working dynamically with a wide range of issues, problems and self development needs. As well as being deeply relaxing, hypnotherapy can help you to address the unconscious patterns of learnt behaviour that are often blocks to progress in life. Hypnotherapy can also help you to develop and build your personal strengths, resources and help you to achieve your goals. Hypnotherapy like CBT and EMDR is founded on cognitive science and neuroscience perspectives about how the mind and body work together at the neurological / chemical - adaptive information processing level. Over the years cognitive science and neuroscience have invested a great deal of research investigating all aspects of hypnosis and the ways the mind and body functions in relation to one another. Within our society today we are surrounded by media that is continually using the language patterns from hypnosis and NLP to drip feed our unconscious minds with their suggestions. In my opinion, Hypnosis / Hypnotherapy, as an approach to therapy and coaching, is one of the most cutting edge aspects in psychological therapy being used today. This is because when it comes to promoting positive change within our lives, self healing, pain relief and performance enhancement, understanding the healing and empowering nature of language is essential.

Neuro - Linguistic Programming (NLP):

Neuro - Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a relatively new movement within the psychological therapies. NLP shares a great deal in common with CBT in that it focuses on helping individuals, couples, families or people in business and sport understand the ways that their unconscious unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving can be adapted to new more positive and productive ways of being. NLP is founded on some of the most influential research from psychology and neuroscience. This has been combined with the exploration of human potential and the science of excellence - the study and analysis of people who are high performers and how they reach their achievements. NLP processes are fun and easy to learn, they will help you to build your strengths, capabilities and resources, quickly help you to realise your true potential and passion in life, remove personal blocks and help you achieve your goals.

Evidence Based Practice:

The therapy that I provide is founded on evidence based practice. What this means, is that not only is my work founded on current cutting edge research, but that every person that I work with helps to inform my professional development, and builds on my previous experience. The very basis of psychological therapy, is that it is specifically tailored to my clients individual needs and requirements. Whether you just need to talk, or you are interested in exploring things much deeper, or want to experience a range of therapeutic possibilities, so that you can choose the therapy that fits you the best. One size of therapy does not always fit everyone. Therefore, the therapy that I provide is a process that is defined by an openness to adapt flexibly and develop creatively. In essence the therapy you receive has the potential of being an experience that is every bit as individual and unique as you are. What would you like to talk about or work on in your life?

Research Interests:

My research interests include the exploration of experiential practices such as, Relaxation, Meditation, Mindfulness, Focusing and Hypnosis. I am also interested in exploring the psychological benefits of bodywork practices - in particular, T’ai Chi, Yoga and energy work. I have researched the use of Progressive Relaxation, Imagery and Visualisation within Sport Psychology, with the specific aim of enhancing sports performance. One of the most effective ways I have found of doing this, is to help people develop a deep awareness and understanding of the experience of presence. Quintessentially, presence is the experience of being in the moment, where the mind gives way to pure physical and kinaesthetic experience, where the performer is in flow with whatever activity he or she is involved - the Zen of no mind. My research for my Masters explored the experience of being mindful of the present moment and of attuning to our immediate experience within our therapeutic work as Counselling Psychologists and Psychotherapists. This research I believe has important implications for all human activities where a fine attunement of specialised skill is required - including the performance of music and sport for example. My research also highlights the performance inhibiting nature of pushing ourselves beyond our optimum level of performance - which has applications in all work environments and raises important questions about our current cultural norms and working practices that cause stress and burn out.
